The Technology learning area is a rich tapestry of learning in a range of contexts that focus on creativity, design and construction. The knowledge and skills acquired are transferable and prepare students for the real world and for tomorrow.

Graphics and Technology (Hard Materials)
“Technology is intervention by design: the use of practical and intellectual resources to develop products and systems.” – NZ Curriculum
Graphics and Technology (Hard Materials) challenge students in ways unlike any other subject. As stated in the NZ Curriculum, Graphics and Technology are the creation of a product (by design) and manufacture utilising practical and intellectual resources. These courses are for ALL students.
Graphics is technical design which still uses the pen and pencil while incorporating high end computer technology. Technology (Hard Materials) allows students to get their hands on a range of materials and tools – to develop skill, knowledge and insight into the fabrication process.
These subjects offer students the opportunity to be innovative, creative and show initiative. The students learn teamwork and communication skills.
Not only does it provide technological literacy essential for informed participation in today’s world, it also provides skills useful in a variety of tertiary courses and paves the way to exciting career opportunities.

Option subjects for Years 10 – 13 in Graphics and Technology (Hard Materials).

Food & Catering

In a world that is rapidly changing and evolving, the culinary arts is one area where creativity and passion are at the heart of the matter. As Jamie Oliver can testify, there is nothing as rewarding as being paid to do what you love.
Here at Lytton High School a student can, over five years, develop their passion and interest in the culinary arts through our Food and Catering courses.
The Food and Catering courses provide:
A basic understanding of safe food practices.
Development of a range of skills to produce quality food products.
The promotion of healthy eating.
A beginning pathway for a career in the catering industry.

Textile technology also utilities both creativity and passion. These are manifest in the design and production of a range of garments in this learning area.
The Textile course is now available for Year 10 students. This is beneficial as they enter into the senior school, especially if they wish to pursue a career pathway in the Apparel Industry. The inclusion of standards from Competenz, a youth training organisation, whilst retaining Achievement Standards and Unit Standards will give students the opportunity to gain more
credits towards NCEA.
The Fabric courses provide opportunities for students to:
Be able to confidently use fabric construction equipment
Understand the techniques and processes of garment construction
Expand their knowledge of textiles and their uses
Display creativity in garment construction.

Lytton has been a leading light in Digital Technologies for quite a while. In our Junior School programmes, students enjoy learning experiences in a variety of programs that develop a broad range of computer skills, including programming, 3D-modelling, graphic design and productivity. Digital citizenship is examined and underpins their development.
At the Senior School students should choose to study what fits best with their goals and aspirations and their other subjects. All of these strands contain their own Achievement Standards and Unit Standards, catering to a range of student interests. All of them also link to industry-related courses and a wide variety of work opportunities.
Here is the range of coverage in the Senior School:
Digital Information is about learning the skills of clearly presenting information in documents, tables, graphs and lists. Students learn how to connect up different documents so that changing one updates the other ‘‘automagically”. Learn the best ways to present graphics, choose fonts and line things up to make your work look awesome!
Digital Media allows students to focus on Print media, or Video/Film, or Websites, or Animation or 3D-modelling. These link particularly well with courses in Graphics, Photography and the Performing Arts.
Programming is not just for geeks! In finding out how to write or assemble code, students learn how to organise their thinking and give themselves opportunities to develop their own business by creating apps for Smartphones or other devices. They also have the option to explore robotics.
Electronics is an area of huge opportunity. Students can develop small-scale, targeted solutions for particular problems to enjoy both hands-on problem-solving as well as challenges in the BrightSparks nationwide student community. Those with an interest in Physics could also find this course very stimulating.
Hardware & Networking is a huge growth area for jobs in the foreseeable future. Learning how to set up, troubleshoot and fix basic computer problems is a key part of this strand. The other part is networking devices – not only computers. We are fortunate to be one of the few schools in New Zealand operating as an active Cisco Academy. The courses are both hands-on, up-to-date with the latest industry requirements, and part of an online learning community. We emphasise both hands-on skills and technical knowledge.
